Hair Styles

I like to think I am an open mother, allowing my boys the ability to try things that they want that I may not want so much?
When they both commented on having a rats tail at the back of their hair a few years ago then I couldn't see the problem, pretty much like when Alex asked for his hair to be shaved the last time it got cut, no harm there, would look short for a while but at least he can't say I didn't let them do what they wanted.
Point to self..........never let Alex get hair shaved again, it looked horrible and even his father thought so too!

Back to their hair.....these rats tails have been there for a few years now, luckily they have never complained at how theirs never seemed to get too long, like others they had seen. This may have something to do with

  1. they can't see them
  2. mummy was known to cut them at night without then knowing!
People always asked why they had them and how long they were keeping them for?
Ben finally answered that he was competing in an International Judo Tournament soon and that he would finally cut his then as his opponent could grab it during a hold down and use it to his advantage!

One evening not long ago we went out to my cousin's for his birthday tea and whilst there my uncle asked when it was being cut? Ben answered 'maybe next week' and suddenly my uncle was offering him $12 if HE (my uncle) could cut it now!
Ben was a little taken back but once he understood the idea he seemed to warm up to it slightly.
However then my cousin joined in an up'd the anti to $14. This went back and forth until such time as there was $17 in the pot, however my uncle put a time limit on this auction and Ben had to make a decision in a short period of time.

He didn't!

My uncle though agreed to start the auction one final time however he added a twist and said he would offer $12 if Alex would have his done too?
My cousin then up'd it to $14 and I joined in and told my uncle I would add $5 to his $12 and he could still have the pleasure of cutting the tails off? To me paying $5 to finally have them gone seemed reasonable enough.
My uncle then auctioned off the pleasure of cutting Alex's hair and so it ended with my cousin offering to pay my uncle $5 to cut Alex's.

Ben

It got very confusing at one point as to how much was in the pot and who was doing what?
But eventually it ended with my uncle cutting Ben's hair and my cousin cutting Alex's hair and the boys both walking away with $10 (which sadly they both owed us because they currently are in debt to us!)

Alex

Unfortunately we couldn't find really great scissors, so they were cut off using some simple kitchen scissors!! Which in turn added to the excitement of the moment.
It did mean that Alex walked away with a little bald spot on the left of his head, but hey it is at the back, he can't see it and no one else seems to comment!
It will grow back after all.

Hair Cut

Had my hair cut the other week.
Went a little shorter than I really wanted, but luckily it will grow.
I also decided that seeing as all the highlights had now been removed then why not go dark red!

So I did....

Red Hair

We always get people commenting on Ben's red hair.

How lovely it is, where does it come from (when they look at Steve and me), did we expect a red head?? And many other questions.

Well, I never envisaged my baby coming out with red hair. Steve and I had both been blonde as babies and then gone medium to dark brown.
When I was pregnant I wanted a little girl, always wanted a little girl, but even though we never actually found out I knew that we would have a boy. Just a feeling I had, I just knew it was going to be a boy, especially when I wanted a girl!

So at 1.30am when he was finally born, I remember Steve leaning in over my shoulder (I was kneeling on the floor at the time) and telling me it was a boy! Oh yea and that he was red!

I remember thinking to myself 'oh yea a boy, knew it would be! What do you mean he is red!'
I got over the boy bit very quickly because I think my subconscious had been preparing me for a boy for 9 months, but the red hair, I had never been prepared for that, had never even thought about it.

So there we were with a gorgeous little boy who had red hair, and yes we had to field questions about it for the next few weeks. Like

'Were you expecting him to be red?'
'Where does the red come from?'
'Were you red as a baby?'
'You're hair is red so it comes from you I see?' (mine was via a bottle!)
Actually it is very simple to explain where the red came from....

On my dad's side of the family his sister (my aunty) is red, her daughter (my cousin) is also red.
On my mum's side her brother (my uncle) is red, in fact Ben looks just like him at the same age. several of his children (he has 4, my cousins) are also red.
On Steve's side of the family, well he has red colouring in his beard and his niece (brother's daughter) is also red.

So when it comes down to it, it is really no surprise at all that we ended up with a red headed child, just that is was a totally shock because we never actually expected it!

Haircut

When I annouced that I was getting married, the first thing everyone asked, apart from where was it happening, was how are you having your hair?

My answer was "I have no idea...?!" like I have no idea on the theme I want, the style of my dress or come to think about it pretty much everything to do with the wedding, I was never one to sit and have it all planned when I was 12!

If you read the bridal magazines you will be overcome with all the beautiful pictures of brides in there, you will also notice the common theme that runs through and that is that all the brides are shown with long hair. Not one with short hair, almost as if you have to have long hair when you get married because that way you can have it so seductively piled high on your head with flowers wisping out of the style with the veil nicely stuck on top.

Well looks like I will be breaking with tradition yet again by having short hair!
The first thing my hair person and SIL said was "Grow your hair!" this was because at the time it had just been cut and was rather short.
However I never planned for it to have grown 20 inches in 6 months.
So I did as adviced, hey I've never been married before, I don't know the best amount of hair to have to maintain a veil throughout the proceedings!

Well this week I succumed and headed straight for the hairdressers. Take at least 1/2 an inch off all over please, I can't stand it looking like a birds nest for the next 3 months!
So now my hair is neat and tidy yet again, I feel human again and actually look better, more me.

So I will still be getting married in September with short hair, it won't be cropped short, just a reasonable length that is more me, the veil will sit nicely even if I have to glue it in place, but at the end of the day I will feel like me and will enjoy it more, rather than worrying about how it all looks and regret it later.

Mummy goes Red

I got bored and so I went red, hair colour that is!

This is not the first time I have gone a red shade, and would you believe I got the biggest compliment the next day....

The lady in the kitchen shop noticed I had had my hair coloured and told me it made me look younger.

Now who could ask for anything better than that to make the day go well.

Haircuts

The boys have been going to a Barber for quite a while now. They just use the local one that Daddy uses. Alan's Barber Shop in Onehunga.

Ben has been really good at sitting on his own for his haircut for a while, but today was the first time that Alex actually sat on his own.

Pictures of my big boys getting their haircut.

Oh and they were both lucky enough to score a free lollipop for being such good boys.
