This month our youngest turned 8.
Yep we no longer have little people, they are growing up. Ok not big boys yet but definitely getting there.
So I was very lucky that he had a birthday cake last weekend at his little gathering of friends to celebrate his birthday.
Worked in well with this years scavenger hunt.
Happy scavenger hunting to you all.
Live for today, but makes sure you have fun and smile along the way. Look for the joy in everything, even if you have been there a thousand times.

Birthday
Happy birthday darling, even though it is hard to forget it it is equally hard to find something to buy when Christmas has just past the day before.
Somehow I always manage to make it a Birthday themed day and not a Christmas themed day.

5 Boys and A Wall
For Ben's Birthday this year he again wanted to take some friends to the Climbing Wall and then out to Burger King for dinner.
So we had the pleasure of watching 5 little boys climb like mad up every wall possible in the place
Everyone had a great time and it was just perfect for a group of 9 year olds.
Thanks to all for coming and having such a great time.

My Day
Today is a special day to me, it is my day to reflect on being a parent.
It is my day to look back and remember that small moment of life before we had kids.
It is my day to sit back and think about what was a head, not that we could have changed any of it.
You see our oldest is 9 tomorrow and when he was born all those years ago, I had the pleasure, sort of, of being in labour at home by myself for the whole day.
You see it was that typical 1st baby lark of not really thinking I was in labour and generally ignoring it. It was only at about 4.30pm when I finally called the midwife that we got a small gist of the fact that this might be it and things may be moving.
Steve had gone to work in the normal fashion but I hadn't bothered to tell him about the braxton hicks I had had at 2am, or the next 1 I had at 9am, I mean gezz, I was 38 weeks gone, it was part and parcel of everyday to me.
But something made me start to write down the times when I realised I was having them every hour or 2, and when they went to every half and hour after that. Yet I still didn't call him and ask him to come home to me, I just knew he would be home at the normal time of 5.
Which he was by the way, although he did know the midwife had been to visit so he did come home knowing that things may be changing.
And changing they were....
Here we are now, 9 years later and I can still remember that Thursday in 2003 like it was yesterday. I can tell you things that were on the tv that evening whilst I danced around the living room.
I can remember eating a tuna fish sandwich for lunch.
I can remember that my dad called from overseas, but try as I might there was no way I was sitting down to take the call.
I remember Steve and the midwife suggesting I get some rest as we were probably in for a long night! But there was no way I was able to sit or even lie down, not my thing in labour, I stand.
I remember that in fact the weather was pretty much how it is today....sunny in parts with the odd shower and lots of strong wind, hashing everything around.
And now here we are, 9 years later, I am at home today on my own. The boys are at school till 3, Steve is at work till 5 and I am sure if I turn the tv on at 2pm I will probably come across Oprah (just like then) or something similar, but today I am not having tuna fish for lunch, although that does sounds really nice.

Sad but Proud
Today is my baby brother's birthday (my only brother).

My brother and I at my wedding in 2008 |
He has survived, he has made it. He has fallen down and broken things, fractured things and crashed things but he is still here and is alive & kicking his way forward.
I am very proud of most of the things he has done and achieved over the years, ok there a few down right stupid things he has done but we will forgive him those minor indiscretions.
This also means that it is a sad day for my parents as both of their kids are now in their 40's and that means their kids are no longer babies, to some extent (although I know it never stops) their job is done. Although I think we both still have mum on speed dial.
They can both be very proud that they have grown 2 super children to adulthood. They have gotten us both through the trials and tribulations of childhood, university, first loves, 2nd loves and even 3rd, 4th and 5th loves!
They have watched us move countries, leave their side and grow by ourselves.
They have been there to support us when we finally found the 'one' and celebrate us both getting married.

So happy birthday to my brother, may you survive another 40 years and just keep on growing with age.

Birthdays
Last month was Alex's 7th birthday.
I can't believe he has been at school for 2 years now?
We have a rule in this house that you get a party for the following birthdays 5th, 6th, 10th & 15th. Then we will review the situation.
We decided that they do not need a party every year and so on the years inbetween then they get to invite 2-3 friends to join them for an activitity.
Alex chose Bowling, 10 pin bowling.
This was followed by the typical meal that all kids love...Burger King

Birthday Time
As mentioned here, we have just had a long weekend here in New Zealand, and it really wasn't much of a relaxing weekend for us! We had so much to do. Mainly all for the boys, looks like their life has finally gotten more exciting taken over our life!!
Birthday
Monday was our youngest son Alex's 7th birthday. How he has ever got to this age I just don't know? But he managed so let's just hope he can make it to 8! Mischievous little monkey that he is!
He didn't seem to remember that it was his day because he went and watched tv in the morning with his brother, letting mum and dad have a small lie in. It was actually his brother that asked if Alex could now open his presents! Isn't it great having big brothers!
So we had a fluster of activity in the dining room whilst he opened his presents. He was a very lucky little boy, however the best present by his admission that he got was his new dressing gown.
Yes we are cruel parents who have absolutely no worries about giving our children practical needed gifts on their birthdays etc.
This gown stayed on him all day, and he was even dressed under it, almost like it was his smoking jacket! He looked so cute all wrapped up for the whole day.
His god mother and her partner came for lunch as they were passing through and she thought it was so cute he wanted to live in his gown all day.
The only time he took it off was when he told me we were going to the shops so he could spend the money he had received! Talk about being eager.
Shopping for gifts
Grandma sent him money to buy a soccer ball because it was too difficult to send through the post. So he wanted to buy it immediately.
We had to call into K-mart whilst in town and he found something he wanted too, so he used the remainder of his birthday money and some from his money box and brought himself a Sidley Jet (part of the characters from Cars 2)
Funny thing was that when we got home from the shops he immediately went upstairs, got his money from his money box and came and gave it to me, telling me that he would need change as this was a $20 note and that he only owed me $10!
I just about fell over. Ben would never have done that, but then neither would I have done that as a child either, I would just keep quiet and hope that mum and dad forgot that I owed them money! Maybe I have instilled so good qualities in this mad little monkey after all.
There is hope for him, looks like he might just see that 8th birthday after all....but then we do still have 364 to go! Keep watching this space

Busy Busy
We all know that at this time of year it can get very busy, we all seem to manage to find 50 things that must be done by the end of the week.
I am trying to get things sorted and also remember to mail out birthday cards, christmas cards and postcards for Postcrossings.
However it shows that things are a little busy when you receive this from the mail....
Yes, that is correct, I sent a birthday card out in such a hurry I forgot to put a stamp on it, so they sent it back to me letting me know that if I still wanted to send this item then I needed to put a stamp on it!

Advanced Birthday Celebrations
If your birthday happens to fall over a major holiday, then what do you do?
However, the biggest one we have is Steve.....his birthday is Dec 26, Boxing Day.
And this particular year it is important to celebrate due to the fact he is turning........50!
So we discussed it and decided to celebrate his birthday at the beginning of December. Why I hear you ask, well because everyone, including ourselves, are away over the Christmas period (it is our summer holiday after all). We can't celebrate closer to the day because everyone knows this is the manic period of everyones life, what with work functions, school functions and any other organisation function you happen to be involved in.
This week I am out Monday and Wednesday night, the boys have Judo on Tuesday and Thursday and Steve and I both have a work function Friday afternoon/evening. So this is one of our busiest weeks before Christmas.
So this past weekend we had a party to celebrate his 50th Birthday at my mum's house in Rotorua.
Sadly I didn't get pictures of the party in full swing or even of any of the guests having a great time playing pass the parcel! But I did manage a picture of the birthday boy with his birthday cake.
The weather did not cooperate quite how we would have liked it too, but we all had fun anyway.
So thank you to everyone who came and celebrated with us this past weekend. Steve had a wonderful time and loved catching up with family and friends.
Thank you to mum, who kindly loaned us her house for the party and also helped us by doing some of the shopping and helping us cook the food.
It was all delicious and nothing was wasted, in fact for once it was the perfect amount required for the amount of people attending.
I think it was a great way to kick start the festive session ahead.
Celebrate 6 months in advance? Celebrate the week before? Or even 4 weeks before?
Depending on when it is then I guess you celebrate when convenient.
A friend has a child born on Feb 29, she said they choose which day suits them best Feb 28 or Mar 1, although she says they do try to stick to the same day each year!
Alex is born over a public holiday weekend here in New Zealand. We always celebrate his birthday on the right weekend but when you want to hold a large party then you have to celebrate the week before or after due to everyone going away for the said weekend!

Another Birthday and Family Fun
Take one crazy family ......... hum, think that would have to be my one!
Take another birthday, which we seem to have lots of in this family.
Mix it all together with ...........a duck race!
Yes you read right...a duck race.
And what follows is a mad series of pictures depicting our fun filled afternoon in the sun throwing plastic ducks down a small stream leading into a lake!

It was a wonderful family fun filled afternoon, with lots of laughs and crazyness. Apparently there is talk of an annual event, so watch this space for next years adventures.

others were prepared for a long ride with supplies |
luckily none of them sank! |
